What is it about your MBA program that students love the most?

Tight-knit community; real projects for leading companies; award-winning, accessible faculty

Tell us about one new course that has recently been added to your curriculum in the last year.  How do you see this influencing the current cohort?

Food and Agribusiness Marketplace

Those new to Minnesota are often shocked by the sheer number of food and agricultural companies headquartered here. The food industry is baked into the state’s identity. It may not at first seem obvious that agriculture and a school of management are a natural pairing, but it turns out it may be the most synergistic pairing of all, especially for the Carlson School.

Whether it be for brand management, strategic pricing, or global supply chain optimization, the links between agribusiness and management are clear. Students at the Carlson School are uniquely positioned to develop these integral skills that will make them stand out in any industry.

In addition to valuable strategic development, this course will influence students in current and future cohorts to think more broadly about their individual choices and how they fit into the global community. There is more interest in food labels, what you eat, what is going on overseas, and how we are going to feed this huge population. A lot of people want to know about the bigger world today.

If you could invite a fictional character to lecture in one of your courses, who would it be and what course would he/she teach?  Why?

If you think the business world is daunting, imagine spearheading a rebellion against an all-powerful, evil empire that just destroyed your home planet. With this perspective, it would be our honor to have Princess Leia lecture in our core strategic management course.

Strategic Management, required for all MBA students, establishes the critical thinking framework students will need for the remainder of their MBA study and for success as business leaders. This class introduces students to the concepts and techniques used to create and implement a sense of corporate direction; choices that involve the integration of different functional areas; and the skills involved in identifying issues, evaluating options, and implementing strategic plans.

Princess Leia’s fierce leadership, experience managing cross-functional teams (she could use the largely successful evacuation of the Rebel base on Hoth as a case study), and astute ability to comprehensively assess her competitive positioning as a rebellion force makes her one of the most formidable strategic leaders—whether in business or a galaxy far, far away.

University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management

Students join the Carlson MBA community expecting to be challenged and transformed, all the while growing both their professional and social networks. The Carlson Enterprise Programs provide our students just that—an opportunity to completely transform their career path and knowledge/skill gaps, establish relationships with potential employers, and discover an organic approach to building team camaraderie. We are a community of driven, inquisitive students and engaged, dedicated faculty and staff   who believe in success through collaboration. After a two-year transformational experience, our students graduate with the confidence and ability to lead and make meaningful impact across the globe.
