What is it about your MBA program that students love the most?

Students love the camaraderie within the community and faculty accessibility

Tell us about one new course that has recently been added to your curriculum in the last year.  How do you see this influencing the current cohort?

Smith’s new semester-long leadership development program isn’t a single course, but a series of challenging, focused co-curricular activities that push students to develop leadership competencies.

The 2017 “Leading Fearlessly” program began with daylong activities that challenged students to select and practice one leadership trait in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment. One group traveled to Gettysburg with U.S. Naval Academy instructor Joseph J. Thomas, while a second group stayed in Maryland for an “Arctic Survival” at Patapsco Valley State Park and an “Amazing Terp Race” in Annapolis.

In the program’s second phase, each student chooses a specific leadership behavior to practice over 10 weeks with executive coaches, peer partners and alumni. Students work in pods of three with an executive coach.

At the end of the semester, a yacht race at Annapolis Harbor on the Chesapeake Bay allows teams to put their leadership skills into practice, and an end-of-semester learning gallery gives students a chance to demonstrate their accomplishments to corporate sponsors.

We’re really pleased to be able to offer executive coaching to our full-time MBA students, and the current cohort has been very pleased at the way the coaches help with their individual development priorities.

If you could invite a fictional character to lecture in one of your courses, who would it be and what course would he/she teach?  Why?

It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (A Scandal in Bohemia)

There are several aspects of Sherlock Holmes’s personal life we wouldn’t want students to emulate, but Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective would be a terrific introductory lecturer for Data Mining for Business. Smith’s MBA curriculum works to infuse critical thinking skills into every class, and the great detective’s relentless pursuit of data that will give him insight into problems is a great model for future business leaders.  And Sherlock Holmes doesn’t just collect data – he is an analyst without peer. In a big data environment it is easy to get bogged down in metrics that don’t matter. We can picture Holmes telling the class, “It is of the highest importance in the art of detection to be able to recognize, out of a number of facts, which are incidental and which vital. Otherwise your energy and attention must be dissipated instead of being concentrated.” (The Reigate Puzzle)

In addition to mastering core functional business knowledge, the Smith Full-Time MBA Program helps students develop sophisticated analytical skills and an “integrative” systems understanding of the way the functional aspects of organizations interact.  Students learn how to leverage big data for better decision-making, and explore their career options in a tight-knit community that encourages intelligent risk-taking, not cutthroat competition. Class sizes are small and the faculty are supportive, challenging and invested in student success.
