What is it about your MBA program that students love the most?

The ability to lead and influence change within the Tepper community.

Tell us about one new course that has recently been added to your curriculum in the last year.  How do you see this influencing the current cohort?

Teaching students how to make decisions based on data is a hallmark of a Tepper School MBA but sometimes there isn’t sufficient data available.  “The Art and Science of Prediction,” an elective taught by Professor Alan Montgomery, addresses just that.  Students learn how to overcome biases and make predictions not only in data rich environments but also ones that are data poor.  This expertise allows our students to make accurate estimations of the future in any situation and avoid the overconfidence (and inaccuracy) that accompanies predictions without full information.

If you could invite a fictional character to lecture in one of your courses, who would it be and what course would he/she teach?  Why?

A second year MBA student notes she would like Frank Underwood from House of Cards to teach Organizational Power and Influence, a course that recognizes organizations as political institutions.  Frank exemplifies a lot of the concepts discussed in class such as mobilizing resources to get things done, developing influence and understanding how power is distributed within an organization.  However, we do think he would need to adjust some of his lectures as his tactics cross some moral and legal lines.

CMU Tepper

The Tepper School MBA provides a powerful combination of analytics and leadership designed to equip our students with the tools needed to make data-driven decisions and the leadership skills that lead to long-term career success.

Beginning with analytics in the core, Tepper MBAs use predictive and prescriptive modeling and optimization to turn data into information for making better decisions--these models can be applied across functional areas including financial, marketing, operations, and planning situations. Then our leadership coaches work 1:1 with students to develop their leadership skills to gain buy-in from stakeholders across the organization to successfully implement the solution.
